President's Message

DeirdreRecently my dog ate most of my paper copy of the AIWC Constitution. This joined a long line of household objects that she has chewed over the years including several eyeglasses' cases, the reading glasses themselves, coasters, lipstick, money (Swiss francs are more durable than U.S. dollars), leather wallets, plastic credit cards, tubes of toothpaste, and, of course, dirty socks. Remarkably, she never chews shoes. I mention my dog's odd eating behavior as the loss of the AIWC Constitution prompted me to go online and re-discover the wealth of information about our club available to members (and partly to the general public) on our website. Our useful, informative website is maintained by Webmaster Christina Surtees with the assistance of Margaret Saine and, from either Arizona or Montana depending on the season, our former webmaster, Karen Roberts. If you need to know what/when/where about club activities and events, members' addresses and telephone numbers, how to register for an event, wish to read a past newsletter, or if you need a copy of the AIWC Constitution, I encourage you to visit our terrific website www.aiwc-lausanne.org! Thanks Christina, Margaret and Karen!

This month and next our events will be sponsored by our Community Services team. Chair Gilla Stead has scheduled a presentation by our member, Lola Grace, head of the Middle East Children's Institute for the afternoon of February 21. More details of this presentation may be found on page one of this newsletter and remember: check the website, too! Membership in our club fluctuates throughout the year meaning that the jobs of the membership team are never complete. Chair Caroline Reynolds has more than ably managed this role with the assistance of Hilary Bales and new member Sue Barry. Thanks, ladies! Yet Membership and other areas of our club would benefit greatly from additional volunteers. Please note that our club doesn't run itself. We welcome your involvement and encourage you to (you guessed it) check the website for volunteer opportunities or just contact me or any Board Member (details listed on the website) and we will happily point you in the right direction.

If you have an email address on file with the AIWC, you received notification of the recent death of our former president, Doris Dorward. Doris died quietly at home in late December. A memorial service was held at the Scot's Kirk January 6 with many AIWC members in attendance. Doris served two terms as president, was active in the Hiking and Bridge groups and frequently attended monthly events. Our condolences to Doris' family. Donations may be made to Transport Handicap Vaud (CCP 17-674158-3) in Doris' name.

Yours,
Deirdre McDaniel, President
